Fantasia

Today I’m going to share Fantasia the earlier animation of Disney ,   Fantasia is a 1940 American animated film produced by Walt Disney and released by Walt Disney Productions. With story direction by Joe Grant and Dick Huemer, and production supervision by Ben Sharpsteen, it is the third feature in the Disney animated features canon. The film consists of eight animated segments set to pieces of classical music conducted by Leopold Stokowski; seven of which are performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra. Music critic and composer Deems Taylor acts as the film's Master of Ceremonies, who introduces each segment in live action interstitial scenes.
Disney settled on the film's concept as work neared completion on The Sorcerer's Apprentice, an elaborate Silly Symphonies short designed as a comeback role for Mickey Mouse who had declined in popularity. As production costs grew higher than what it could earn, he decided to include the short in a feature-length film with other segments set to classical pieces. The soundtrack was recorded using multiple audio channels and reproduced with Fantasound, a pioneering sound reproduction system that made Fantasia the first commercial film shown in stereophonic sound.
Fantasia was first released in theatrical roadshow engagements held in thirteen U.S. cities from November 13, 1940. It received mixed critical reaction, and was unable to make a profit. In part this was due to World War II cutting off the profitable European market, but due as well to the film's high production costs and the expense of leasing theatres and installing the Fantasound equipment for the roadshow presentations. Also, audiences who felt that Disney had suddenly gone "highbrow" stayed away, preferring the standard Disney cartoons. The film was subsequently reissued multiple times with its original footage and audio being deleted, modified, or restored in each version. As of 2012, Fantasia has grossed $76.4 million in domestic revenue and is the 22nd highest-grossing film of all time in the U.S. when adjusted for inflation. Walt's nephew Roy E. Disney co-produced a sequel released in 1999 titled Fantasia 2000.

here is some model sheets of Fantasia :

production animation model sheet
lithography on paper, dimensions: 11" x 14"
Since the early 1930s the Disney Studio has produced model sheets of its animated characters and/or atmosphere and concept art for circulation among artists and animators working in production of an animated film. Before the 1970s they were reproduced by a photo static or printing process. They were made when a character or setting was in development and to help animators maintain a consistent look to the character throughout the film.
This printed model sheet titled "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" was made at the Disney Studio during production of Fantasia, and it was issued to animators for their use in drawing Mickey Mouse, his master's hat, the broom he brings to life and buckets it carries. This is the classic model sheet of Mickey Mouse in one of his most important roles, depicted in numerous drawings by supervising animator Fred Moore. The box reproduced in the model sheet beneath the title includes the signatures of initials of director James Algar, story men Perce Pearce, and Philip Dike, animator Fred Moore, layout men Thomas Codrick and Charles Philippi.

pencil on untrimmed animation sheet, image size: 3.75" x 3"
This original rough animation drawing of Hyacinth Hippo was created by a Disney animator in development of a scene in the Dance of the Hours segment of Walt Disney's landmark animated feature. The drawing is by Preston Blair who, with lead animator Norm Ferguson, animated Hyacinth in this scene in which the lead ballerina goes into her solo dance on the lawn outside the palace of the Duke Alvise. Mr. Blair wrote the designation "80" at lower right to indicate this original's place in the scene.

They were superseded by the live-action orchestra and do not appear in the film. Interestingly, the shadow of a human hand appears in one of the images, indicating that Leopold Stokowski would have conducted the bug orchestra.
